I heard that there was only 8,894 people at the Tampa Bay game tonight! Is this true? How do they draw only 8,894 people on a Friday night?!!! Will the Tampa Bay Devil Rays go to whoever doesn't get the Expos (either the D.C. area or Portland)?

GO PIONEERS!!!

Ed,

That seems like a small crowd for a MLB game. It sounds more like a Beaver's game in July.

An even better question is why are we both up at 3:30am in the morning. LOL

The D-Rays lease will prevent them from moving anywhere except bankruptcy court. The Marlins lease, OTOH, expires at the end of this season so they could load the moving vans this fall.

Ya, you'd think the Rays would have had a huge crowd for the return of Rocker. Roll Eyes

I'd rather not root for the Rays to go banko, but the situation there does seem to be dismal. IMO, no matter what ownership does in TB, that area will never sufficiently support the team. Frown

I still cannot concieve of how MLB bungled the Tampa Bay situation so badly. For god's sakes, who did their market analysis? You could've put a team in Eugene and they'd pull more than 9,000 for a friday night game. And that stadium...? wow. MLB may not need contraction...the Rays might just fold.

Herons!

Actually, I believe the Marlins extended their lease through 2004 already, but it is on a year-to-year basis.

If the Devil Rays had a decent stadium it could be way different. Remember when the Giants would draw below 10,000 for years and years on a Friday at Candlestick and now they sell out every game.

Their Tampa Bay Buccanaires stadium looks to be the most fun of any stadium with the pirate ship that shoots a canon.
