Has anyone mentioned lately what a fraud college athletics is? ---------------------------------------------------- Portland and Major League Soccer. It kicks! |

Well, Division I, anyway ... We'd love to have 100 million donated to us here at George Fox!

As a Duck alum, I love it. As a citizen, I wonder what college sports is coming to and I think that money probably should have gone to the Gates Foundation or something along those lines instead.
Oh, and.... go Ducks!!! |

Of course, I'm a Duck. I know the Pit has to be replaced. I know the new commitment to baseball helps out more than just the school (the Emeralds should hopefully be able to breathe easier soon).
My concern is Phil dependency. Someone is needed for counterbalance, and the Pape Group isn't sufficient. While I'm not generally one to give one of John Canzano's points any credence, his point about a new palace actually needing to be FAN-friendly says plenty. I'm not sure Phil keeps his head sometimes. Of course, Canzano's comment about building smaller than 12K was kind of silly (making money by hosting March Madness first rounds generally helps). ---------------------------------------------------- Portland and Major League Soccer. I too love the Ducks, and while I love what The Phil's bottomless wallet can bring, it certainly is a quadruple edged sword, and w/a gun to my head, I'd rather the money go to schools, but hey, it's his money of course...I greatly appreciate his monstrous Duck contributions, but sure wish he'd make it his life's goal to bring MLB (I'd also settle for NFL!) to PDX, though as I've mentioned before, he did try in the early 90s to bring the Giants here from SFO, but was frustrated by a lack of support in Salem (shocker!

I wonder what Mr. Knight is up to this week? He has sold 1,000's of Nike shares this week alone... Hmmm...

What a wondrous night it was at Autzen Fri. night, as I witnessed another demolition of the NCAA's version of the Evil Empire, UW...beating the Huskies just never gets old, and if it happens to completely humiliate UW as it surely did (44-10 Fri. night), then so much the better...my only concern is this: surely Ty Willingham will be fired sometime between now and December--could UO's offensive genius Chip Kelly be UW's next head coach (a guy tailor made for Jake Locker's admittedly awesome talents)?

I've come to realize how much of a joke this is. The place to be is on CBS.
The SEC and CBS agreed to a new contract last month. 15 years. $2.25 BILLION dollars. That's $12.5 million per school per year. Not even Notre Dame clears that with NBC. That doesn't even include, for instance, $10 million a year Florida will get from a local TV partner. Imagine. I think the Pac-10 doles out 2 or 3 million per school per year? Could be wrong? Sick, no? ---------------------------------------------------- Portland and Major League Soccer. It kicks! |

Interesting article about the deal and how it will affect the other conferences and networks:
http://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/article/59915 Another interesting tidbit (to me, since I haven't paid a heck of a lot of attention to this before) is that the ONLY way the PAC 10 considers adding two teams is if Texas and Colorado were the two teams. It's all about media markets (and to a lesser extent, having top notch research institutions). |

it makes some sense to admit tejas but im not so sure about 'rado...it always made me cringe when someone suggested admitting a fresno st or byu into the pac10...just don't be like the big10--continue to call yourself the big10 even though you have over 10 teams [annoying]...come to think of it a kid next to me at autzen had a great pac9 shirt on w/a husky w/a line through it a la ghostbusters...wonder if the big12 would be ok w/a washington /texas trade

Colorado = Denver media market
Texas = Austin and San Antonio markets (and the entire state, given the team's following). Any other markets within a geographically reasonable distance are in smaller media markets which would drive down the average media revenue per team (kinda like the dilemma with MLB). |

Yeah, CL, I understand that...though Texas' tradition/prestige is a lot more formidable than Colorado's...and, when you combine San Antonio/Austin's markets (and much of Texas as you cited), it probably bests Denver's media size...having said that, Denver's market size is obviously still signifcant--when I semi-pooh-poohed the idea of Colorado, I was mostly speaking from an aesthetic point of view, not purely economic (i.e. media market size)...you are right, Colorado and especially Texas are the only programs (at least that come to mind) that would really be in the Pac10's best interests r.e. expansion.

You are raising a fair point though - 10 years ago, Colorado was on par with Texas as a football school, but now? Not so much.

Tom Hansen actually put it as an equation on record. A market with more than 1.9% of the nation's households would allow Pac-10 schools to make money on expansion.
Colorado is JUST over that mark. Texas, of course, obliterates it. That also sends a message about the money paid for a conference championship game. SEC gets a lot, the ACC not so much. Apparently, the networks won't make it worth the Pac-10's while. ---------------------------------------------------- Portland and Major League Soccer. It kicks! |

Sheesh, I've tell you guys about this before (not about losing coordinators, but the need for UO to make more $$'s), and you guys blew me off, saying that the Pac 10 is just fine, and UO doesn't need to do anything different. Well, maybe now you will listen. Want to make sure Chip Kelly stays around for at least a little longer? Expand Autzen again. I'd love to be able to boast that the University of Oregon has an 80,000 seat stadium. And I wouldn't mind seeing Oregon State have a similar seating capacity for Reser. And really, there is no excuse why this cannot be done. Who do UO and Oregon State compete with for fans in football? Definitely not the NFL. It's in Washington State. No Arena League football teams either. Hmm. Having that many seats ensures a good solid revenue flow even in the harshest of economic times. College football is a huge business down South and takes precedence over the NFL, which may come as a shock to you NFL types who believe that the NFL is only the football worth watching. PNB: you're right, SEC football is the king of all sports in much of the South--and yes, the SEC is, unforunately, clearly superior to the Pac10--the only Pac10 team I see that is the equal to the SEC's strongest teams is of course SC, which would whip any of the SEC's schools IMO...w/Chip Kelley, UO's Off. Coordinator, it's not so much that UO has to pay him more (although they should)--almost irregardless of how much the Ducks pay him, if he gets an offer from a halfway decent school for a head coaching gig, he's probably as good as gone...and understandably so--I'm sure his ultimate goal is to become a HC, not just an Offensive Coordinator whiz...

That's why I said "hold on to Chip Kelly for a little bit longer." A coordinator who knows he's good isn't going to stay around long, especially if he gets a head coaching offer. Though it may sound a little crazy, I can see Chip taking an offensive coordinator position at the University of Texas in order to better market himself as head coaching material. Gene Chizik, current Iowa State head coach, used to be Auburn's defensive coordinator a few years back. Then he bolted to Texas, and from there landed the head coaching job at Iowa State. Auburn lost another DC to Texas too, and he'll probably wind up coaching his own team soon if the current trend holds.
BTW, I have no doubt in my mind that SC can compete with and beat a lot of SEC teams. In fact, I told an Alabama fan awhile back that I believed SC could easily beat his team, and he told me I was crazy or an SC fan. Hey PNB--do you ever make it to the Pensacola area? I was in Pensacola Beach a few years ago, and the waters were the warmest (warmer than Hawaii) I've ever experienced...and those sugary, pure beaches...Heaven.

As close as Pensacola is to me, I haven't made it down there since my senior year in HS. Most of the time I go to either the Panama City or Destin beaches. Destin is definitely the better of the two. One of these days, I'll see about making it back down to Pensacola again.
