What ever happened to the Pioneers, Why is there no more Logo post about that team name. To me that is the one that fits best the city and the word Portland. The colors need to be Black/red/white or Some type of blue/Silver/black or Brown.

You know...

one variable we haven't considered yet is the comedic value of Red Sox fans' pronounciation of any propective team name.

I submit, therefore, that "Ced-ahs" and "Py-o-Nehs" have a distinct advantage over "He'ons" and "sh-Nook." I believe that Red Sox fans might go Don Zimmah' over our selecting "Green Sawx."

(note: Did anyone else notice how nobody had posted in this thread for a month and a half...? This used to be the hottest topic not involving Steve Bartman.)

Reno-cuse,

That is an awesome logo. It is both futuristic and throw-back at the same time. It is definately unique, and that is something Portland must have.

Can you design the uni's too? incorporate the patch, and make a cap!

Man that is good stuff! I am again sold on Herons as the name for our 2005 MLB club (by way of Montreal, Oakland, Florida, or Minny-sota).

Okay guys, I tried to make the "P" look a little more "Heron-y" without destroying its "P-ness"...wait, maybe I should rephrase that... Anyway, we'll see if some feathers off the top suggests "Herons" a little bit.

Also, Moderators, et al, we've had some really great logos put up here, by myself and others. Most of them have now, however, been relegated to the mists of Forum history... This is a sad fact. I submit therefore, that we should have a page for stuff like this on the website. I think having a web page where visitors could "Name the Team" would be fun. Much like the "Trees, Baristas, etc" ad in the paper, such a webpage with our logo submissions could only help people get excited about having a real life, tangible baseball team. Likewise, we should also have a more accessible "what would you like to see in our ballpark" suggestion box for more casual visitors.

This is (way) off topic, I am curious about you Playa. You are from Portland, I assume you did some undergrad work at the University of Nevada, and now, presumably at Syracuse (masters)?

Whats your story Smile

bingo. I took one look at the job market and thought, "you know, a Masters degree doesn't look too bad at this point." So here I am, snowed in, and using Herons' logos as a creative form of procrastination.

here we go again...

Okay, this one is supposed to look kinda silver and metallic. Not sure why exactly, but it was a doodling epiphany during econ... I've included both the (original) gray-scale version as well as another in brilliant technicolor. Let me know what you think.

I don't understand why people don't like Herons. Obviously, you're entitled to your opinion, but I think its a perfect name for several reasons. For one, the Great Blue Heron is Portland's city bird. Anyone that golfs at Wildwood or walks along the Willamette Greenway trail can tell you why. Did you know that Ross Island is actually set aside from development to be a heron rookery? So obviously Herons is a uniquely local name.

But beyond that, baseball has a tradition of bird names. We've already got Orioles, Blue Jays, and Cardinals, and thats just in the majors. There are many more bird names in the minors. I think it would be neat for Portland to tap into that tradition in its own local way. You don't hear Orioles fans complaining that their name isn't "tough" enough. Besides, as far as birds go, Herons are pretty intimidating. They're huge and rather than eat bugs, they munch on frogs, small rodents and fish. They're gorgeous, fascinating, and majestic birds, and would be a classy representation of Portland, in my opinion.

That said, I still love "Cedars" as a team name too.

I really like that new logo Reno (I mean, 'cuse), it makes the logo a bit tougher looking, not that I think it needs to be.

And frankly a herron would easily win in a fight with a Oriole, Blue Jay, or Cardinal, or heck all three at once, the have wing spans in the area of 5 feet.

Just a rule of thumb - if you have to convice someone that something is cool, it is not cool.

I have nothing against the heron, but most people east of the Rockies would think it is a stork.

Sorry, Portland Reds, but Great Blue Herons are common throughout the U.S., and having lived 45 years east of the Rockies (and south of the Mason-Dixon Line), I can tell you that 90% of the country that knows anything about birds would easily recognize that as a GBH, not a stork. However, because it IS a representation of a Great Blue, I'd prefer the color scheme as blue and silver, not green and silver (Green Herons and Green-Backed Herons are entirely separate species).

If we're looking at bird models, I'll reiterate, for those of you that missed the long-ago discussions on this subject, that "Portland Peregrines" is the way to go. The Peregrine Falcons is spread throughout the country as well, but is much rarer than the herons. Yet there are pairs nesting regularly on the Fremont Bridge. The Peregrine was the "bird of kings" during the Middle Ages; only royalty was allowed to hunt with Peregrines, for they were considered the fiercest and fastest of all the birds of prey. Yes, a noble, fearsome choice for our fair city!

PORTLAND PEREGRINES IN 2005!
