Stadium idea is a sweetheart of a pitch

From Dwight Jayne's Column
The Portland Tribune

Let's see, a local tribe offers to finance a beautiful new ballpark in exchange for rights to a casino in the Portland area. Duh, how can local politicians mess up this sweetheart deal? Please, don't let them bring up their distaste for gambling "” not while the state has video poker terminals on every corner and Keno boards on the walls of convenience stores, right next to the scratch-offs and Powerball machines.

That legalized-gambling argument ended years ago. Admit where we are and move on.

If the tribes are willing to go to that extent, the state ought to cut out the middlemen and build its own casinos. But I know that's too good of an idea to ever happen. Just say thanks, try not to act too giddy, and take the ballpark, folks. It's a win-win situation for the construction jobs alone.
