Mayor, tribe meet over stadium plan

Mayor Vera Katz met with Grande Ronde Indian officials this morning to discuss the possibility of financial aid for a major league baseball stadium in Portland.

The city is making a bid for the Montreal Expos. But the state's budget crisis has made funding a serious obstacle.

Last week, the Grande Ronde tribe surprised Katz by offering to help finance a stadium if the city would agree to allow a casino in the metro area.

Any casino built off reservation land would require the governor's approval.

Katz and the tribe left the talks all smiles this morning and said their discussions were very positive.

They declined to discuss any details.
