Dreams realized, dreams deferred
Another unpredictable year in business

What they said: Supporters of big-league baseball, in continuing to keep the faith that Portland will one day secure a team, vowed to crunch out a financing plan that might lure the Montreal Expos or another wayward franchise.

What happened: The supporters completed their plan, then watched as Major League Baseball selected Washington, D.C., as the Expos' new home. The Washington City Council, after refiguring a stadium proposal to make it a public-private venture, voted earlier this week to OK the deal.

Regardless, Portland's baseball-backing contingent, which includes outgoing Mayor Vera Katz and Indiana Pacers exec David Kahn, shrugged that Portland has long had its eye on other teams besides the Expos. And when a team becomes available, Kahn and company can present a plan that they say will easily raise the $350 million-plus needed for a stadium -- at no cost, Kahn hastily added, to taxpayers.
