I hope everyone reads the comments that were posted after the article above for which Paul provided the link. The absolute stupidity and near-sightedness of almost every post shows what will REALLY prevent major league baseball from ever coming here - people with no vision to dream big, think big, and act big! We here at the OSC still have a lot of educating of the general public to do. The utter silliness of it all ...
"... In the unlikely event a MLB team ever decided to throw away any chance of making money by coming to PDX ... Our team would be more like Kansas City...always losing. Due to MLB's salary structure a team in PDX could never be competitive ... I've never heard of a minor league park being upgraded to major league standards ... There are too many dreamers in this little farmtown ...As for MLB, too many better things to do in Portland in spring/summer than watch a bunch of guys chew tobacco and scratch their privates ... There aren't enough corporations in PDX to sponsor a team ... If MLB were to ever come to PDX (and that's not in the foreseeable future), there's no room to build a stadium inside city limits without major excavation / eviction. They would have to look at either Gresham, Hillsboro or Wilsonville for location options ... The Lents neighborhood wanted it, let them have it ..."

i know what you're saying bc, and i am on your side...however, if seattle, with the entire pacific nw market all to itself, loses $4.5 million [as they did in '08]--well, it gives you an idea of the uphill climb pdx would face in terms of profitability/perception they could become profitable...if somehow miraculously pdx nabbed the a's, maybe they could copy what they did in oakland, where they've operated on a shoestring budget, emphasizing the minor league system [really what pdx could use is a phil knight-type suggah daddy w/a plump wallet]...oakland has actually been fairly successful--eeking out profits many years with a tiny payroll [by baseball standards] while remaining pretty competitive...baseball in pdx would be glorious--there is simply nothing in the world that is better to do [especially in july in pdx--which has the best summer weather in the usa] when it's 75 degrees outside than to watch a major league baseball game...and, i have no doubt pdx would support major league baseball in terms of backsides in the seats and tv ratings....however from a purely mundane economic perspective, mlb2pdx isn't a no-brainer....so how about them national champion george fox bruins!!

I honestly don't know who to believe in major league baseball any more. Bug Selig and the bigwigs in New York trumpet attendance and revenue records, yet the team owners plead poverty. Frankly, I don't trust either one of them, but they won't allow an external audit to arrive at the real truth. Meanwhile, the players and their agents go around demanding more and more money (as if teams had their own money-printing presses), and who cares who's going to have to pay for it? Somebody is lying!
As for the Bruins, well, all I can say is "Unbelievable!" We had no starters back, only four returning letter winners, and 10 freshman. We knew we eventually had a chance to be be pretty good - but this good this fast? No way! Anyway, it was a lot of fun. Once we got past Hope in the sectional, that's when I first thought we were going to really win it all. Most SIDs go through their careers wondering if they will be ever be with a championship team - Now I've been with two (baseball in '04). Pretty amazing! I am very blessed to have been there for both.
