Remember A Mr.Todd the Montreal Gazette reporter well I was told he did an interview on the radio up there and said he heard the Expos are now headed to Virginia, he did not specify NOVA or Norfolk and the A's are headed to Sacramento. Has anyone heard anything about that at all? the last I knew Sacramento had no serious effort at all going to get a MLB team. confused

They don't.

I don't believe a word of this. Gossip spreads too easily, and as we have seen, not everybody that talks to the media can be trusted.

Thanks NY thats what I thought that Sac Town had no effort going at all to get a team. Speculation is fine but Todd should label it as such.

at a AAA stadium? However, putting a team like the A's in SacTown does make more sense than putting a team like the Expos clear over there. (some moron on the Alabama Live.com board thinks that a Sacramento NFL team would go over well. Sheesh!!! roll eyes)

Long live SB978 and HB2941. So Long Hannon and Derfler!! You will not be missed!!! Na Na Na, Hey Hey, Goodbye!!!

Right, Bama, MLB has no place to play in Sac, and no new park on the horizon.

Interesting bit about NFL in Sac. Raider owner Al Davis once used Sac as leverage when negotiating the move of the Raiders from LA back to Oakland, along with the infamous Irwindale deal. That's about as close as Sac will ever come to the NFL! wink

I thought Sacramento had the concrete poured for a baseball stadium right next to Arco Arena, but they stopped there with the idea of completeing an MLB stadium when they got a team.

Or something like that.

Got what team?

That sounds pretty odd to me. Pouring concrete is actually a fairly advanced step in construction, seeing as how it comes at the end of the planning, rendering, budgeting, financing, contract bidding, and public debate phases of any ballpark proposal.... wink

The original owners of the Kings (when they moved to Sac) owned about 200 acres of land in the North Natomas district of Sac. They wanted to develope the land, with the stadium/arena as the centerpiece. The city told them that they could build the arena, but had to wait on the stadium until at least 100 acres were developed.

After the completion of the arena, the owners decided to go ahead and pour part of the foundation for the stadium. No building permits were needed from the city for this phase of construction. They hoped that this would spur the city to allow construction of the stadium. Sadly, the economy of CA took a sudden downturn (around 1988-89), and the developers/owners lost so much $ that they ended up selling the Kings, the arena, and the land. As far as I know, there are still steps on the north side of Arco Arena that lead to a vacant field with the remnants of a concrete pad for a ballpark; a "Field of Dreams," if you will. frown

I'm sorry, I'm a little confused here.

Are you saying that they wanted to build an arena for the Kings and a baseball stadium in one complex? Minor league?

Yes, a major-league football/baseball combo stadium, to be exact. In fact, the access road to the arena had (maybe still has) the sign "ARCO SPORTS COMPLEX" above the road. They even had a scale model of the proposed stadium on display at the arena. Wonder whatever happened to that? confused

Went looking for photos of the foundation but came up empty, here's a little more detail about the ballpark from the Sacramento Business Journal (from a story about a proposed AAA ballpark in 1999):

"[Paul] Crawford maintains the site near Arco Arena in North Natomas is better and could be developed faster. The partial foundation left from the ballpark that [Gregg] Lukenbill started to build in the 1980s could be used. And water, sewage lines and permits already are there."

But a major league park?
