We've heard about this plan for at least two years. However, that there would be a concrete deal to move to Fremont comes as a bit of a disappointment to me, as this would mean that their Oakland days may be coming to an end. Let's hope that their tradition of competitive baseball carries over to the new location. - Transic

A's Reach Deal To Build New Stadium In Fremont

(CBS 5) FREMONT The Oakland A's have reached a deal to move to Fremont and build a new ballpark there, sources told San Francisco Chronicle columnist Phil Matier - who is also a CBS 5 commentator - and KCBS Radio.

The A's will reportedly acquire a 143-acre site near the former Baylands racetrack off of Interstate 880 in a deal Cisco Systems. A 40,000 seat ballpark will be built on the site; the team will pay for the new stadium - in part - through housing and retail development also on the site.

KCBS reported Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig was expected to come to the Bay Area a week from Tuesday to announce the deal along with A's owner Lew Wolfe, Fremont city officials, and executives from Cisco, which will lease the land for the complex.

The A's have not yet commented, except to say that they hope to make a major announcement soon. The commissioner's office has not yet commented, either.

The A's have played in the Coliseum since 1968 and are currently on a year-to-year lease in Oakland. That lease deal has an annual option for the team to renew until 2013.
