Welcome MG20!

Enjoy the site and post often!

The second reason is that this name is a tie to a minor league past which is something I would like to leave behind when we head into our Major League future.

I agree....Timberjacks! Big Grin

One thing though....The Brewers, Orioles, Marlins, Halos, Padres, Rangers, and Royals all have ties in their names to minor league teams that once played in those cities..While I do agree we need to get another name, the Beaver needs to have a place in the logo or uni in some way...

Honor the past, look toward the future....

Welcome MG20!

Glad to see you here, and I hope to see you post often.

You know, the one name that cropped up all the sudden that I always loved is the "Knights".

Yes, I know it's a minor league name, and yes, it was the fictitious team that Roy Hobbs played on, but it's a very regal name and it has that "old time" feel to it like the Yankees.

"PLAY BALL!" OSC

Knights is fine ... unless the International League's Charlotte Knights want to challenge our use of it.

The NY Knights logo and unis were pretty sharp and I admit that name is something you can't go wrong with....

But won't the Aloha Knights want royalties? Smile

I do like that name. Portland Knights. Hmmm. Doesn't tie in the beaver though. Maybe a knight in shining armor beating off a massive evil beaver? Wink

I think the best name for a team in oregon would be the Chinooks, especially if the stadium is near the river. Another idea would be to name the team the same as the farm team for the expos or something that might remind you of the farm team. I have never heard what that team was named though.

Portland Trappers? Not bad ... Oh, wait, then you upset the PETA crowd. Does anyone know if Edmonton has it copyrighted? I'll check when they get here next week.

Trappers isn't bad at all. A friend of mine suggested the explorers. Again we may have a problem with copyrights. I also still like the Chinooks.

I was just thinking, Trappers would work really well for our area. Vancouver was started as a fur trading company and I'm not sure but I think Portland has some roots in fur trading and trapping as well.

I still prefer Herons, but would be happy with Exlporers. Heck, I'd root like crazy if they were called ANY name even some ones that would get turned in to all **** here.....

Hey all. In order, my top three choices are:

Portland Explorers
Portland Herons
Portland Trappers

Also, my daughter recently saw a large bird on a neighbor's house. When I told her it was a Heron, she liked it.

Not trying to be a naysayer, but Chinook sounds alot like Shnook, a Yiddish word that means . . . well, come to think of it, I don't know what it means, but I don't think it's something very complimentary.

And Knights, that is a good one. Surprising that it hasn't already been taken by a Major League team. Now we need to be careful of the dragon interest group - - the knights used to slay dragons, after all. And the Taliban might not like the name either, as it might remind the Arab community of the Crusades, something they don't appear to have gotten over, even hundreds ofyears later.

I like the idea of both the Trappers and Knights, but Herons sounds pretty weak. When you name a competetive team you want a name that resembles strength. You don't want a name that is going to have the fella's on Sportscenter mocking your city and team. As far as colors, nothing purple or feminine shades of blue....those are taken and weak. The current Expo red, white, and blue is very good...traditional and patriotic!
Thank You.

Timberjacks is not a good idea. I don't agree with the Beaver theme, not just because I am a Duck fan but because a Beaver is not a feared animal...unless you are a tree-hugger. If we keep suggesting these weak and funny sounding names heres one.......Portland Power Puff girls. That was a name you may as well settle on if you like the Timberjacks, or Herons.
Keep on with Knights and Trappers

I have been checking out the site further and the Lumberjacks idea is good with the suggested uni's and colors. Timberjacks just doesn't sound right but Lumberjacks sounds cool..tough...I could get used to that.

Just joined the forum, so hopefully I'm doing this correctly.
Is it possible that the Expos would move here and play as the Portland Expos for one season while a new name is selected? This would allow the team and baseball to sell two sets of merchandise to the fans like me who are crazy enough to buy gear with both names.
...Just for the record, I vote for Pioneers as the new name.
